Alan McIvor grew up in Saskatchewan. He spent his career in the pulp and paper industry, first as a design engineer in a paper mill in British Columbia, and then as a consulting engineer working for printing-paper manufacturers. He has always enjoyed machine design and developing ways to make machines work more efficiently. Upon retirement, he converted the wood-frame, one-car 1950s garage behind his house in Vancouver, B.C., to a workshop and has been busy building furniture ever since.
