Laura Mays, director of The Krenov School, grew up in Ireland. She got her degree in architecture, but finding she didn’t enjoy it, spent much of her 20s exploring, living in Japan, New York, and Scotland for a bit. At 28, she discovered a course in furniture design and manufacture in the west of Ireland, and fell head over heels for the hands-on aspect of woodworking. “Working with wood is a huge pleasure; it’s a warm, somewhat forgiving material, and each piece is different, has its own story.”
